Have you ever sat and pondered to yourself the thoughts and questions about who is actually an artist? When you think about art do you visualize paintings, sketches, or watercolor prints? Many might even think of photography. But what does it really mean to be an artist, or one who actually practices art? Art is one of those words, in my opinion, that has no clear and precise definition. The definition is so difficult to pinpoint, and really it is subjective depending on who the person is that you are talking with at the moment. Art to me is any way of expressing ideas, beliefs, or views in an individual way that not everyone else can manage to do. Things like writing, acting, and dance are just as much art to me as painting happens to be.
Not everyone in the world is born with a gift for writing, and when a book has the ability to have it’s words reach out of a page and truly “speak” to someone, that is a true art form. Writers work diligently to create works that reflect human ideas and emotions through word. When words can captivate you, then you know that it is something truly rare and incredible. Even books that are guilty pleasures were written with a theme and artistry behind them.
Acting is difficult to do. Like writing and television options, not every person can take on acting and be great at it. When a person can change who they are emotionally and mentally, sometimes even physically to take on a role that is totally different than who they are in reality, that takes a real gift of art. Actors like Christian Bale and Johnny Depp become so encompassed by the characters that they are portraying that you forget who the actual artist is.
Dance is a form of art that reveals emotions through movement. It is a beautiful and poignant. The thing about dance is not just the movement, but the music behind it also. There are many dance performances, though, that are just as emotion evoking without the music because of the sheer beauty of the movements.
Art is what you want it to be…at least that is what I always say. I prefer some art forms over others, but it all seems to take a skill and a talent that not everyone can have.
